Antique Tortoiseshell Bamboo, Hand Painted Floral Fire Guard
Early 19th century English Victorian bamboo fireplace screen with reverse hand-painted wild rose motif on finely reeded glass.
This beautiful piece has been made by framing the glass with tortoiseshell bamboo. There are v-shaped legs for it to stand and a handle, for easy movement. As this is an antique item it does have some movement in the joints, which makes this a delicate piece.
A fire screen or fireguard began as a form of furniture that acted as a shield between the occupants of a room and the fireplace, and its primary function was to reduce the discomfort of excessive heat from a log fire.
